PM interview with DJ Mark Pappas

PM: For those PM users that aren't yet familiar with you, please tell us a little bit about your background as a DJ.

MP: Well I am based out of Philadelphia. I am part of the Tigerhook Corp which is a collective of djs and producers. I do a few regular parties in Philly but for the most part I play in Central and South America. I've played all around the US, Argentina, Greece, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala and several spots in the UK. I also have a monthly proton show called Philth which is the first Thursday of every month from 6pm-9pm East Coat time.

PM: Besides DJing you've already created quite a nice discography to your name. Can you tell us a little about your remix work and other productions?

MP: Again being part of the Tigerhook Corp I have been lucky enough to be around some amazing producers. My first few remixes I did with fellow Tigerhook Corp member Randall Jones. I picked up a lot from him and started to focus more on my own productions and remixes. Between the members of Tigerhook there are releases on Bedrock, Hooj Choons, SAW, The End, Polyester, CP Recordings, EQ Grey, South Records, Younan Music and many others.

PM: What are your main tools as a music producer? What kind of software and/or hardware do you tend to lean towards?

MP: I am pretty much strictly software based. The only outboard instruments I use are my guitars and their outboard effects units. My main DAW is Ableton Live 6. I use Reason 4 as well but it is rewired into Ableton. As far as VSTs my favorites include a free plug in by dBlue called Glitch, Audio Damage Replicant, PSP Vintage Warmer 2. For soft synths I love all of the Rob Papen stuff , Gforce Imposcar is sick and the Arturia synths. I recently bought Guru for drums and I love it: Guru + Korg PadKontrol = awesome. Of course I use a lot of the Puremagnetik Micropaks. RackPak is definitely my favorite. The glitch racks are clutch! There's tons of other soft synths and vsts I use but if I were to list them all it would take a few pages!

PM: What does your production and DJ schedule currently look like? What kind of projects are you currently working on?

MP: For dj gigs I have a couple dates in the next few weeks in Panama and some regional gigs in the Philly/DC area. Lately I have been focusing on original production and remixes. Recent releases include an original track I did with Tom Sawyer for Younan Music called "Cabaret", it is featured on Saeed Younan's new mix compilation. I also did a remix for the Tattoo Detectives for their track "Dirty Volume" on Teggno Records. I just completed a remix for Ralph Falcon & Charlie Solana's "Control". Another one I just finished is an original track with fellow Tigerhook member Hito called "Rebenga!". Current projects are an EP for Teggno Records which hopefully will be finished in the next couple of weeks or so.

PM: Is there anything else we should know?

MP: I love moon lit walks along the beach, curling up on a bear skin rug in front of the fire with a nice red wine and of course Puremagnetik!;-)
